Spring is officially here, which means Cherry Blossom Festival time! This year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival runs March 20 through April 14. Tickets to the Opening Ceremonies are sold out but there’s still plenty to do this weekend including the free SAAM (Smithsonian American Art Museum) Cherry Blossom Celebration this Saturday from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm at the museum’s Kogod Courtyard. Check out the festival website for a complete list of festival activities. There are also plenty of things happening locally to keep you busy this weekend if you don’t feel like heading downtown!

Falls Church Restaurant Week continues through March 25. Enjoy lunch and dinner specials at some of the area’s most popular restaurants. Visit the Restaurant Week website for a complete list of participating restaurants.

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum in Old Town Alexandria is offering a Specialty Tour: The Feminine Side of the Tavern. Participants will learn about the many roles women played in tavern life during the 18th century. This event will reoccur every Saturday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am during the month of March. The cost is $15 and advance ticket purchase is recommended.

Take a special evening tour at Frying Pan Park in Herndon to learn how the farm animals settle in for the night. This tour is available Friday or Saturday evening from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm and costs $10 per person. Tickets can be purchased online in advance.

Learn about women’s contributions during the Civil War at Fort Ward Museum’s Civil War Women’s Day. Through talks and demonstrations, visitors will learn about soldier’s aid societies that were launched by women to support both sides as well as women who disguised themselves as men in order to join the armies. This free event is Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The 56th Annual Woodlawn Needlework Show and Sale runs through the entire month of March. The show is open from 10 am to 4 pm every day except Tuesdays. Visit the website to buy tickets in advance and to view the special events that will take place throughout the month.
