Here are some events happening in our area this weekend. A new exhibit opened at the Lyceum in Old Town Alexandria titled “Alexandria’s Nurses & Hospitals During the Civil War.” This new exhibit details the life of Clarissa Jones, a nurse at The Lyceum hospital during the Civil War. Fans of the PBS drama “Mercy Street” will see parallels of the characters portrayed in the series and the women who worked as nurses in Alexandria during the Civil War. The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum in Old Town Alexandria has a new exhibit titled “The Green Family Exhibit.” The exhibit will feature the purchases and stories of the Green Family and the Union Quartermaster during the time that Alexandria was occupied during the Civil War. The Alexandria Black History Museum in Old Town Alexandria is presenting "The Journey to Be Free: Self-emancipation and Alexandria's Contraband Heritage," This exhibit tells the story of African Americans who escaped slavery only to find themselves in Alexandria, a city under siege. "The Journey to Be Free" shows the legacy of Alexandria's African American community and the amazing story of their burial ground that was lost and rediscovered. On Saturday 2/27/16, Lee-Fendall House Museum and Garden in Old Town Alexandria is offering a special “Downton Abbey” tour. The tour will feature the service wing, which is not normally open to public view. The tours will start at 11:00 am.  Tickets are available for sale through the museum’s website at www.leefendallhouse.org.  Tickets purchased in advance are $10 per person, tickets the day of the program will be $12 per person.  Advance tickets are highly recommended This is the last weekend to view the "All aBoard" art exhibit in Del Ray. The exhibit showcases works by eight members of the Board of Directors. Gallery weekend hours are Saturday 12-9pm and Sunday 12-6pm. On Saturday 2/27/16 beginning at 2pm, the Civil War Interpretive Center at Historic Blenheim  in Fairfax will feature Lillian Garland portraying Elizabeth Keckley a former slave turned professional dressmaker and confidante of Mary Todd Lincoln. This event is free. Also on Saturday, 2/27/16, The Manassas Museum in Manassas is hosting Book Talk: The First Battle of Manassas: An End to Innocence, July 18-21, 1861. The event will be led by author John J. Hennessy a leading Civil War battle historian. This is a free event. On Sunday, 2/28/16 at 1pm Gunston Hall is hosting an event titled “Seeds of Independence Breaking Bread: Food and Fellowship on Mason Neck.” Culinary historian Leni Sorensen and members of the Mason Neck community will explore African-American culinary tradition in Virginia and memories of food and fellowship on Mason Neck. Call 703-550-9220 or email historic@gunstonhall.org for more information. Free, but donations are appreciated. Green Spring Gardens and Horticultural Center in Alexandria is having a Leap Day Tea. Learn how Leap Day keeps us in alignment with the stars and hear about historic events that have happened on February 29. Discover the folklore and superstition surrounding Leap Day.
