System - Friday, August 31, 2018

Summer is officially winding down and fall is around the corner. I know many of us will be trying to get every last possible minute of pool time, but if you’ve had enough pool days or are just looking for something to do, here’s a list of activities happening around our area this weekend. Unfortunately, with the end of summer comes an end to the Free Concerts that area residents have been enjoying since June. The good news is that with fall we get fall festivals and a list of the area’s many festivals will be coming soon!

Fridays at the Fountain is Crystal City’s seasonal pop-up beer garden that features live music from local bands and musicians. Admission is free and food and drink are available for purchase. Fridays at the Fountain are every Friday from 5-9pm at the Crystal City Water Park. This week’s performer is Mary El.

Roast marshmallows while learning some history at Ben Lomond Historic Site in Manassas. This Friday’s History by the Campfire will feature a lesson on Teddy Roosevelt and his relationship with the site. Admission is $5 per person, 2 and under are free.

The Herndon Labor Day Festival is Monday from 11am to 5pm at the Herndon Town Green. This festival spotlights Virginia wine and craft beer. In addition to wine and beer tastings, there will be live music, a craft show, lawn games, and more. Admission is $25 for wine and entertainment which includes a glass for wine, $25 for beer and entertainment which includes 4 beer tastings, $5 for concert only. 12 and under are free. No pets allowed.

Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Alexandria is hosting its annual International Festival this Monday from 11am to 5pm. Choose from Asian, Hispanic, German, or American cuisines while enjoying live music and entertainment. There will be a wide variety of kid’s activities including face paint, train rides, rock wall climbing, and more. Admission is free but food and some activities will require tickets. Parking is available at Mt. Vernon High School with a free shuttle to the festival.

If you’re a trombone fan, New Orleans’ brass band Bonerama is playing at the Workhouse Arts Center this Sunday at 5pm at their BBQ. Beer. Bonerama concert. Local food trucks will be available starting at 4pm and beverages will be sold ala carte. Tickets are $30 at the door.

If you like bells, Monday is the last live concert at the Netherlands Carillion in Arlington until next summer. Edward M. Nassor will perform from 2-4pm.  There are limited benches and no trash cans so bring your own seating and be prepared to carry out what you carry in if you plan on packing a picnic.

Sunday’s Free Book Talk at the Manassas Museum will feature author Terry Barkley who will discuss his book, “September Mourn, The Dunker Church of Antietam.” The free talk will begin at 1:30pm.
