Here are some events happening in our area this weekend. There are some especially interesting activities for Civil War enthusiast! Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site, Alexandria, VA: Civil War Surgeon and Field Hospital Program - Saturday 4/23/16 11am-4pm - Learn about Civil War medical care and practices in a living history program presented by historian and interpreter Von Barron. Mr. Barron will portray a U.S. Army surgeon in a field hospital setting that features a variety of medical tools and equipment of the period. Also meet African-American nurse Susie King Taylor, portrayed by Heather Butts, author of African American Medicine in Washington, D.C.: Healing the Capital during the Civil War Era. Rain date is April 30. Mason Neck State Park, Lorton, VA: Mason Neck Eagle Festival Saturday 4/23/16 - Enjoy live animal shows, including presentations by the Raptor Conservancy and Reptiles Alive. There will be guided hikes, wildlife and nature exhibits, nature programs, fun activities and games, and great music and refreshments.  All activities will be outdoors rain or shine. Park admission and the events are free. Workhouse Arts Center, Lorton, VA: Workhouse Concert Series: The Hot Lanes Big Band Saturday 4/23/16 8pm - The Hot Lanes Big Band is a 16-piece culmination of a dream musician and composer Bobby Jasinski had in 2014.The group features a diverse and talented group of musicians from the region.  The first half of the night will be presented in a concert-style format, but the second half of the night will feature music made for dancing! Ticket cost includes admission to the event plus a complimentary pub-style snack mix. There will be a cash bar serving beer, wine and soft drinks at a la carte pricing. Advanced ticket purchase is recommended. Ticket cost is $20-$25. Frying Pan Park Meeting House, Centreville, VA: These Walls are Talking: Civil War Stories – Sunday 4/24/16 1-3pm - More Civil War battles were fought in Virginia, from Manassas to Appomattox, than any other state, and the Frying Pan Meeting House served as a field hospital, encampment and picket post during the war. Learn about significant battles in Virginia and the soldiers who fought them with the help of re-enactors and special exhibits. This free event is for participants age eight to adult. Parking is available at Frying Pan Farm Park. Take a free wagon ride shuttle from the Country Store to the Meeting House. Donations will be gratefully accepted. If inclement weather occurs, the event will be moved to the Indoor Arena at Frying Pan Farm Park.
