Northern Virginia Attractions

Northern Virginia Attractions

Northern Virginia is next door to our nation’s capital – Washington, D.C. – yet has kept its own character reminiscent of colonial times:  rambling plantations, equestrian farms and cobblestone streets leading to quaint taverns, chic shops and historical gems.

The largest county in Northern Virginia is Fairfax, a treasure trove of unique historic sites, museums, performance venues, and natural wonders. Visit and discover such national treasures such as George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, the Workhouse Arts Center, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, and Great Falls National Park.

Much more history can be found throughout Northern Virginia. Arlington honors our nation’s soldiers and military history at Arlington National Cemetery and the Women in Military Service For America Memorial.

Northern Virginia is a favorite destination of shoppers, from upscale malls to bargain outlets and winery shops. The region’s large shopping centers, such as Potomac Mills and Tysons Corner Center, bring in numerous visitors, as do the area’s entertainment venues. Concerts can be seen at Wolf Trap Center for the Performing Arts, George Mason Patriot Center, and at smaller arenas scattered throughout the area. And of course, there are numerous museums and monuments to visit both in D.C. and in Virginia!

The western region is considered “Horse Country” with steeplechase races, horse shows and polo matches. For a “western adventure” visit the Marriott Ranch in Hume, with horses to ride, trap shooting, outdoor bbq and downhome hospitality. For an upscale resort, try Lansdowne in Sterling.

This same area is also home to Virginia’s many and well respected Wineries.  Enjoy a light meal, music and wine tasting at beautiful venues such as Boxwood in Middleburg, 868 Estates in Purcellville, and convenient Paradise Springs in Clifton VA.

It’s a great place for sports fans as well: Washington Redskins for Football, Wizards for Basketball, Capitals for Hockey and D.C. United for Professional Soccer. Fans can also watch minor league games with the Northern Virginia Royals Soccer and Potomac Nationals Baseball teams.

Northern Virginia offers plenty to keep its residents, and guests, busy. From shopping to entertainment, museums and culture to excellent restaurants – there is always something new to explore.
