System - Thursday, May 24, 2018

Memorial Day Weekend is here and while many of us will enjoy the start of summer and the opening of the pools it is a time to remember those who have made the greatest sacrifice for this country. Here’s a look at some memorial events that are happening throughout the weekend in addition to other fun weekend activities.

There will be multiple wreath laying ceremonies and other events throughout the weekend at Arlington National Cemetery including a Presidential Armed Forces Full Honor Wreath-Laying Ceremony at 11 am on Monday. All events are open to the public but space is limited. See the Arlington National Cemetery website for more information about specific events.

The 23rd Annual Luminaria at Fredericksburg National Cemetery is Saturday from 8 to 11pm. This event honors soldiers who have died in the service of this country. 15,300 candles will be lit to represent each soldier buried at the cemetery. A bugler will play “Taps” throughout the evening and park staff will be available to tell stories about some of the soldiers.

A Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at the Mt. Vernon Recreation Center in the City of Alexandria on Monday from 11am to 12:30pm. There will be a reading of the names of the 67 Alexandrians who were killed or missing during the Vietnam War. The observance will be outside at the Captain Rocky Versace Plaza.
